Hester: Tories urged to reject his money

By Paul Seddon Politics reporter, BBC News

A major Tory donor has apologised after reportedly saying that Labour MP Diane Abbott should be "shot".

Frank Hester, who has donated more than £1m to the Conservative Party, made the comments at a party meeting.

He later apologised, saying his remarks were "a crass attempt at humour".

Ms Abbott said the comments were "frightening" and made her feel "less safe".

A Tory minister has said his party would take another £10m from a donor who allegedly made the comments.

Mr Hester reportedly told a meeting: "It's like trying not to be racist but you see Diane Abbott on the telly and you think, 'I'd like to shoot that'."

Ms Abbott said she was "quite upset" by the comments.

"It's frightening to hear someone say that about you," she told the BBC.

"It makes me feel less safe, and I think it's quite irresponsible of him to say something like that."
